Senior Engineer
Characteristics of Position
The Senior Engineer is a registered engineer who independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a number of variables. Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional position and equivalent graduate level education and developmental experience.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Managerial duties include coordinating and reviewing daily operations of Department. Performs project work which involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment for which there are precedents. Project assignments usually include one ore more of the following: tests of materials, preparation of recommendations / specifications, research investigations, report preparation, and other activities of limited scope requiring knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in the specific narrow area of assignments. Responsible to follow and encourage adherence by others of established Company policies and procedures. A particular challenge associated with this position involves maintaining staffing levels to meet project service demands. This position does ‘flex’ to perform field work but has a primary and continuing responsibility to manage department, including review and reporting of deliverables and review of field and laboratory level of service.
Supervises and / or performs a variety of office and field management and engineering tasks including:
- Input of data into and (potentially) modification to computer programs.
- Calculations and reviews data.
- Field and laboratory testing.
- Field inspections.
- Writes reports.
- Works with other engineers on projects.
- Maintains quality of work.
- Provide technically correct and thorough reports on proposed scope of work.
- Reviews assumptions of investigations at time of construction services; reviews adequacy of construction services.
- Utilizes department employees in ways to provide efficient and thorough service; (ie quality and chargeability goals are met).
- Maintain clients by responsiveness to needs.
- Daily review of current jobs and employees daily work.
- Work with other supervisors, managers to provide assistance or to request assistance where needed.
- Delegate appropriately to staff. Be a leader.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Limits of Authority
The Senior Engineer works under the direct supervision of the General Manager. A portion of work is reviewed by others. Lower level and repetitive assignments for which a clear precedent has been set and previously reviewed by others do not require review. Supervises and coordinates the work of technicians, drill crews, others assigned to assist in specific assignments.
Relationship to Others
Works for the General Manger. Existing Senior Engineer on staff available to answer day-to-day questions and helps the Senior Engineer to solve problems. Receives instructions from President regarding complex features, and possible solutions. Work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment. Works to maintain good employee moral and considers suggestions and input from others. Supervises and directs technical employees.
Knowledge and Experience Required
Has a B.S. or Masters degree in Civil Engineering, has passed the P.E. exam and has at least five years technical and professional experience with at least two years being professional experience.
Conditions of Work
Must have a valid drivers license with a clean record. Work is performed in the field and office. Travel out of town is required several days per month. Work schedules are set depending on project requirements. The goal for this position is to have 1,664 billed hours per year.

Engineering Technician
Characteristics of Position
Engineering technicians perform various construction materials testing related tasks in the field and/or laboratory setting.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Under supervision, performs various laboratory and field assignments. The actual assignments for each Engineering Technician depend on a number of factors, including but not limited to experience, education, training and certification of the employee and scheduling needs of the client. Engineering Technicians must keep accurate field and laboratory records. Engineering Technician must follow Company policies and procedures. Potential assignments include the following:

Has sufficient formal education to understand and execute written instructions, codes and procedures, as well as perform math calculations.

Must have a valid drivers license with a clean driving record. Work is performed in the laboratory and the field. Travel out of town is required several days per month. Work schedules are set depending on project requirements. The goal for this position is to have 1,976 billed hours per year.

Assistant Technician
Characteristics of Position
This is the entry level position for engineering technicians in construction materials testing.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Assistant Technician must keep accurate field and laboratory records. Assistant Technician must follow Company policies and procedures. Under close supervision, learns to perform a limited number of laboratory and field assignments, including the following:

Driller Helper
Characteristics of Position
This is the entry level position for engineering technicians in subsurface sampling procedures.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Drillers Helper acts as an assistant to the Driller. Drillers Helper picks drill rod and auger from storage on the drill rig or truck bin and moves it to the drill head area at direction from the Driller. Under close supervision, Driller Helper performs additional duties to include field tasks such as site layout and measuring water levels in completed borings. Driller Helper shall clear soil cuttings from the ground surface using a flat head shovel, only when the auger is not moving. In no case shall the Driller Helper stand or move within 3 feet of the auger or auger head at any time.
Relationship to Others
Reports to and accepts direction from the Driller. Meets the client representative(s) and potentially the public when performing duties. Directs all client and/or public contact to the Driller and the Drill Hole Logger.
Knowledge and Experience Required
Required to have a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid drivers license. Some previous experience in drilling, construction, or heavy labor is helpful. You must be willing to travel and willing to work in all physical elements. Driller Helper shall follow Company policies and procedures. Drill Helper has ‘stop work authority’. That is, Driller Helper is responsible to call for immediate suspension of work if there are questions regarding work safety or process.
