Energy Services
Overview
Typical energy services involve site engineering for field infrastructure, including Roadways, Pads, Distribution Lines, Compression Plants, Erosion Control, Reclamation, water wells and sewage disposal systems. Construction services for energy clients start with a fast response by our field personnel and short turn around reporting of results.
Civil Engineering Services
Well Pad and Compressor Pad construction design, especially for well pads required for locations with challenging geotechnical constraints including steep slopes, slope stability, rock fall. Rock fall mitigation including rock trenches and rock fall nets. Erosion Control Plans for pipe alignments and gas field roads. Grading plans for pads, pipelines and roadways. Embankment design for soil repository and water impoundments. Reserve pit design.
Environmental Services
Stormwater control plans, permitting and compliance. Water well design and construction. Sewage disposal system design and construction. Pit reclamation and liner determinations.
Structural Services
Foundation design for energy structures including Communication Towers, Compressor Pads and Tanks. Foundation design for Bridges and Culvert drainage crossings.
Geotechnical Services
Exploratory drilling and soil analysis for infrastructure design and design validation. Analysis for remediation of unstable soil conditions.
Geotechnical Services
Soil and Foundation Investigations
Foundation investigations vary according to the type of structure and the nature of subsurface conditions. Our services can assess and solve foundation problems for the following:
- Transportation, including airport, railroad and highway alignments
- Utilities, including power plants, transmission lines, pipelines, and municipal
facilities
- Industrial Facilities, including heavily–or dynamically–loaded foundations
- Mine Structures, including mills, preparation plants, headframes, and conveyors
- Embankments, including grading fill and dams
- Commercial/Residential Structure
Engineering Geology/Geologic Hazards Evaluations
Engineering geology studies are frequently necessary to provide information needed for more comprehensive site engineering evaluations. In addition, they give direct information on potential geologic problems in site development. Services provided in this area include:
- Air photo analysis for fault identification, borrow area analysis, and landslide susceptibility
- Seismic risk studies and estimation of earthquake ground motion parameters
- Identification of landslide, mudflow, and avalanche hazards
- Evaluation of potential for swelling or collapsible soils, mine subsidence, and other geologic hazards
Slope Stability Evaluations
The stability of natural slopes is often an important constraint in siting structures, and the stability of cut slopes strongly influences the safety and cost of projects. Services provided in the assessment of slope stability include:
- Design of cut slopes in soil and rock
- Cut slope stabilization by bolting or drainage
- Assessment of landslide potential
- Stabilization of existing landslides
- Instrumentation for slope movement and pore pressure condition
Site Characterization and Site Selection
For some types of facilities, geotechnical considerations are of fundamental importance in locating the site and establishing its feasibility. Examples include heavy power plant or industrial structures, hazardous waste facilities, landfills, and corridors for pipelines and transmission lines. Geotechnical Engineering Group, using a systems approach, will identify alternative sites or routes, define critical parameters, and perform thorough geotechnical/geological investigations. This approach allows for comparison of sites and provides documentation of the site-selection decision for regulatory or permitting agencies. Services in site characterization and selection include:
- Geologic mapping of structure and lithology
- Geologic “fatal flaw” analysis
- Field investigation of alternative sites by drilling and field permeability testing
- Definition of soil and rock properties by laboratory testing
- Comparative site evaluation on the basis of geotechnical suitability
- Assessment of site development feasibility, problems, and cost

Material Testing Services
Construction Observation and Testing
Construction observation and testing services are offered to provide a level of assurance that construction achieves the intent of the design. The following quality control services are performed for earthwork, concrete, and asphalt:
- Experienced technicians and/or resident engineers to supervise and inspect earth fill placement, inspection of construction, observation of contractor
operations.
- Field testing equipment including nuclear moisture/density gauges, which allows the most efficient use of field personnel in earth fill quality control testing.
- Equipment and trained personnel for sampling and testing concrete
and asphalt.
- Mobile laboratories which can be quickly moved to a job site with the
quality control testing equipment required for that specific project.
In addition, we also provide Building Department required "special inspection" type services such as: structural steel, weld, bolt/connection. fireproofing and reinforcing steel.
Engineering Support Services
Geotechnical Engineering Group provides complete in-house laboratory support for its consulting and engineering activities. This ensures better technical coordination and more effective project management, budget control, and schedule compliance.
